Ilm-e-Ghaib (Knowledge of the Unseen) is one of the most important topics of Sunni Aqeedah. The correct belief — according to Ahl-e-Sunnat wa Jama'at (Maslak-e-Ala Hazrat) — is that Allah ﷻ has given His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ extensive knowledge of the Ghaib through divine revelation and gifting (Ata'i). This is not the same as Allah's inherent (Zati) knowledge. Denying this gifted knowledge is a grave error.
What is Ilm-e-Ghaib?
Ghaib literally means "that which is hidden" — realities that cannot be perceived by ordinary human senses. In Islamic theology, Ilm-e-Ghaib refers to knowledge of hidden realities that Allah ﷻ alone possesses by His own essence (Zati), but which He also shares with His chosen Prophets and Messengers through Wahy (revelation) and Ilham (divine inspiration).
The Sunni Aqeedah distinguishes between two types of knowledge of the unseen:
Ilm-e-Zati (اِلہٰی عِلم)
Allah's own inherent knowledge of everything — past, present, and future — without any beginning, end, or teacher. This belongs only to Allah ﷻ and no one can share it by their own right.
Ilm-e-Ata'i (عطائی عِلم)
Knowledge gifted by Allah ﷻ to His chosen servants — especially to Prophets ﷺ and Awliya — from His vast ocean of knowledge. This is the Ilm-e-Ghaib that the Prophet ﷺ was blessed with.
Evidence from Holy Qur'an
The Holy Qur'an clearly establishes that Allah ﷻ gifts knowledge of the unseen to His chosen Prophets and Messengers. Here are the key Ayaat:
This Ayah is the clearest Quranic proof. Allah ﷻ says He does not reveal His Ghaib to anyone — but then immediately makes an exception: "except to the Messenger whom He is pleased with." This exception refers to our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Evidence from Ahadith
Authentic Ahadith from Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and other reliable sources clearly establish that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was given vast knowledge of the Ghaib by Allah ﷻ:
In this Hadith, the Prophet ﷺ saw all previous nations in a single vision — clear evidence of his vast Ilm-e-Ghaib gifted by Allah ﷻ.
- The Prophet ﷺ informed us about events that would happen hundreds of years after his time — all proved true.
- He ﷺ described Paradise and Hell in detail — visible to him through Kashf (unveiling) by Allah's permission.
- He ﷺ knew what was being plotted against him — as mentioned in multiple authentic narrations.
- He ﷺ was shown all the nations from Adam ﷺ until Qiyamat in the Night of Mi'raj.
- He ﷺ informed about the future events of Constantinople, Persia, and other nations — all proven true.
Ala Hazrat's Position
Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Barelwi (Ala Hazrat) رَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْه wrote extensively on this subject and clearly established the correct Sunni position. His famous work "Dawam-ul-Aish" and "Khalis-ul-I'tiqad" address this topic in depth.
"Say: None in the heavens and earth knows the Ghaib except Allah." (Surah An-Naml 27:65)
The Sunni scholars explain: This Ayah denies Zati (inherent) Ilm-e-Ghaib from anyone other than Allah — it does NOT deny the Ata'i (gifted) knowledge. The Prophet ﷺ was given this knowledge as a gift. Denying this gift contradicts dozens of Quranic Ayaat and authentic Ahadith.
Key Differences
Understanding the difference between Allah's Ghaib and the Prophet's Ghaib:
| Aspect | Allah's Knowledge (Zati) | Prophet's Knowledge (Ata'i) |
|---|---|---|
| Source | His own essence — no teacher | Gifted by Allah ﷻ through Wahy |
| Extent | Infinite — encompasses everything | Vast — all creation gifted to him ﷺ |
| Nature | Eternal — no beginning or end | Bestowed — divinely granted |
| Type | Zati (inherent, essential) | Ata'i (gifted, bestowed) |
| Quranic Ref | Surah Al-Jinn 72:26 | Surah Al-Jinn 72:27 (exception) |
Common Misconceptions
Some groups wrongly claim that the Prophet ﷺ had NO knowledge of the Ghaib at all. This is incorrect according to Sunni Aqeedah. Here is the correct position:
-
Wrong Belief: "The Prophet ﷺ knows nothing about the Ghaib." — This contradicts Surah Al-Jinn 72:27 and dozens of Ahadith.
-
Correct Belief: The Prophet ﷺ was given vast Ilm-e-Ghaib by Allah — as a gift (Ata'an), not on his own (Zatan).
-
Wrong Belief: "Giving the Prophet ﷺ Ilm-e-Ghaib means equating him with Allah." — This is a false argument. Gifted knowledge does not equal inherent knowledge.
-
Correct Belief: Allah ﷻ giving knowledge does not mean equality with Allah — it shows His generosity toward His beloved ﷺ.
-
Wrong Belief: "The Ayah 'Nor does he (the Prophet) know the Ghaib' means he has no knowledge at all." — This is a misinterpretation that ignores many other Ayaat.
-
Correct Belief: This Ayah refers to Zati (inherent) Ghaib. It does not deny the Ata'i (gifted) Ghaib which the Prophet ﷺ was given in abundance.
The vastness of Allah's creation — all known to the Prophet ﷺ by Allah's gift
Summary & Conclusion
The correct Sunni Aqeedah regarding Ilm-e-Ghaib is clear:
- Ilm-e-Ghaib in its Zati (inherent) form belongs exclusively to Allah ﷻ alone.
- Allah ﷻ gifts knowledge of the unseen to His chosen Messengers — especially to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
- The Prophet ﷺ was given vast Ilm-e-Ghaib — covering all matters from creation to after the Day of Judgment.
- This gifted knowledge does not make the Prophet ﷺ equal to Allah — it shows Allah's generosity and the Prophet's ﷺ special status.
- Affirming this knowledge is the way of Ahl-e-Sunnat wa Jama'at — the path of the Companions and true scholars.
May Allah keep us firm on the correct Sunni Aqeedah. May He strengthen our love for the Prophet ﷺ and protect us from all forms of misguidance. Ameen, Ya Rabb al-Alameen.
